Everyone responds so differently to an image of Christ. I wanted to create something that the viewer could stand in front of and have their own personal experience.  If you stand close to the piece you are better able to see the words that relate to Christ, how we see Him, understand Him, and experience having Him in our lives. If you step further back you are able to see the image of Christ, not a exact representation, but something that the viewer can complete for themselves as they contemplate the Savior in their own lives.

The idea for this piece was born from my experiences with hearing people respond to my husbands artwork. No matter how he painted the image of Christ, there were always comments as to why it was or wasn’t the perfect image of Christ. Artist rarely depict Christ to offer a exact image, but rather create an experience, to teach a lesson, or to convey an emotion. I wanted to create something that would open the space to not tell the whole story, but to allow the viewer to have her own connection and experience.

I started with a pixelated image of Christ as my map. Then I cut wood blocks in varying heights to create the contours of the image. I painted each piece with oils paints, once they were dry I arranged the pieces according to height and color to create the image of Christ. Once secured, I then covered each block with layers of encaustic medium. Finally, I used oil paints, pan pastels, ink and metal leafing to complete the piece.
